What is a Pagan and what is Paganism?
Pagan, meaning ‘country dweller’, refers to
Earth-based indigenous European cultures, and, in particular,
ones that have been destroyed and replaced by monotheistic
Christian, Jewish or Muslim religions. As European/Western
people become aware of the value of the cultures that have
been or are almost lost, they revive, recreate and re-vision
those cultures within modern settings. Many pagan movements
have been developed and situated all around the world, incorporating
local customs and environments. Followers rely on old texts
or folklore passed down through family lineages and integrate
them with modern interpretations.
While there are many texts describing and prescribing pagan
religions, there is no One doctrine, developed and maintained
by powerful religious elites. There are options to meet
and worship with others, or to develop one’s own path.
Meeting with a group of people can develop into a worship
that is more organised; this is sometimes referred to as
a Coven or a Circle, with hierarchies of Priests, Priestesses
